Rituals of Ecstacy!

Rituals of Ecstasy!! explores mystical trance rituals that take place not in the jungle, but in cities across the world. It will point out similarities in music, ambience and dance between ancient rituals and familiar clubbing culture.   

Hosted by renowned Australian trance DJ Mark Dynamix, “Rituals of Ecstasy!” is a series that makes the connection between mystic trance rituals and modern clubbing culture.

If a DJ's worth were measured by longevity alone, Mark Dynamix could hang up his slip mats. Having deejayed professionally for more than 15 years, Mark is a significant figure in dance music culture. In this series, Mark will explore the roots of the consciousness-altering trance experience – trance rituals from around the world. Having performed in Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Ibiza, Berlin, Delhi and Paris, Mark brings a savvy, international outlook to the programme.

Rather than just commenting on the rituals he comes across, Mark will also seek to learn from them. He’ll learn about the instruments and rhythms used in these rituals and try to incorporate them into his own music. The program is thus about cultural exchange and not about pure commentary.

Rituals of Ecstasy!! will focus on a new generation of devotees who are young, hip, well-educated and mostly indistinguishable from the average city-dweller.  In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that young, clubbing lawyer might be piercing himself with a dozen metal spikes the week after to fulfil a holy vow. In Seoul, Korea, that pretty young lady in the corner of the room might be a witching woman, due to summon someone’s mother-in-law back from the dead the week after.

In these ways, Rituals of Ecstasy! will connect with the modern day viewer.
