Geoff Tanner

Born in Tasmania and educated in Adelaide (South Australia), Geoff has always loved images, shadows and music. He graduated in Philosophy and Film and Television from Flinders University.

Geoff started work in the film industry as an Assistant Director on the 35mm feature films The Odd Angry Shot, Weekend of Shadows, For the Term of his Natural Life and Silent Reach. He joined the ABC as a cinecamera man and shot documentaries, current affairs and arts programs around Australia.

Geoff produced and directed the ABC long form music series Rock Arena, then Countdown with Molly Meldrum. Geoff has also directed more than 50 Rock‘n Roll Science programs for Beyond International and screened by Discovery Channel USA. The Beyond Tomorrow, Science Frontiers and Ultrascience series all featured science stories told with music video techniques.

He’s also travelled the world as a segment producer with Nine Network Australia’s series Getaway and as producer and director of The World’s Best Beaches for the Travel Channel USA. Animal Face Off, a natural history series he recently directed for Discovery USA, is currently screening worldwide. The challenge was to combine animatronics, computer graphics, multi camera shoots, high speed photography, special effects and some very big hydraulic machines with the traditional methods of good story telling, arresting archive images, direction of non actors and a great soundtrack.  

Geoff also continues to direct drama for the Seven Network Australia’s Forensic Investigators. With a full drama crew including actors, stunts, special effects, weapons, cranes and lighting Geoff recreated a series of notorious Australian murder cases and many shot in period costume on the actual locations of the real murder.

When he’s not making television, Geoff likes to sail the world, draw cartoons, dabble in sculpture and body surf at the world’s best beach.

He is excited about Eating with the Ancestors and Secrets of Paradise and is honoured to join the teams as the Series' Director.
