The Widows' Walls

Duration: 19x60mins

This is a moving and powerful series portraying the tragic lives of four widows in Southern China, forced to live out their lives in a large walled house, finding simple pleasures, and sometimes even love, and suffering the cruelties that the changes in China at that tumultuous time brought upon them.

The story begins in an isolated Hakka house, much like a fort, built on a cliff in a remote village in Southern China. This house placed above the lush green fields was called 'Qing Jie Tang' or "The House of Pure", where the widows from the surrounding area, young and old, were forced to live and work until the end of their lives, thus keeping their 'purity' and chastity through confinement. These nineteen episodes cover the darkest period and horror in the history of th "House of the Pure" from the end of the 19th entury to the start of the anti-Japanese war.

Note: Hakka - a group of Southern Chinese people, now spread all over the world.
