The bear of Mongolia’s Great Gobi Desert is the only onein the world that lives in a desert and is about to be extinct, with perhaps only 15 to 20 specimens currently remaining. The onset of Mongolia's mining boom is increasing human activities in the surrounding region, global warming has resulted in drought, longer summers and more severe winters, and poaching and illegal hunting of the bears are impacting heavily on the bear population.
David Fellows has secured the only permit ever given by the Mongolian government to make a documentary in the bear’s protected area. Harry Reynolds, a Bear Biologist who used to work for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is one of the world's leading authorities on bears. We will follow Reynolds as he triesto collar some bears, to further understand their movement patterns in and around the oases and determine their population size and their genetic variety. Reynolds will give us a scientific approach to the study of the Gobi Bear's behavior.
