Filmed in 15 countries over a 2-year period, the film documents the lives of working sailors, a vanishing breed that will soon die out. Those who still hoist canvas and set out to gain their livelihood from the sea, fishing, trading or carrying cargo are rapidly being left in the wake of technology. The sailing ship as a work ship has all but disappeared, and the final days of this long sailing era are not peaceful ones. Beneath the surface there is a quiet violence as what was ceases to be. Ways of life are in conflict, and even the sea is not big enough to keep them all afloat.
